Getting married? Questions to ask before you choose a makeup artist.

Finding the right person to do your hair and makeup on your wedding day can be the difference between divine and disaster. These are the questions you need to ask before you commit.

Whether you want your wedding to be an elaborate affair like Kim Kardashian's or low-key a la Kate Moss, you want it to reflect your personality. That goes for your look, too. The way to get your vision off Pinterest and into your wedding photos is by hiring the artist who can translate your personal style into your hair and makeup.

Blossom Hair & Makeup won Yellow Pages' "Business of the Month" award for August, 2014. We asked the owner, Sarah Young, some of those must-ask questions for you. Here are her answers:

How would you describe your style?
Wedding hair and makeup needs to fit you as seamlessly as your wedding dress. Blossom Hair & Makeup is renowned for its natural, fresh and vintage looks. We are known for our calm, friendly approach, attention to detail and our passion. Our goal is to bring a new perspective to Sydney's wedding makeup and hair, to break away from typical bridal fashion, done-to-death wedding styling and help brides dream up a wedding that is completely unique to them. Style is personal. It's about embracing who you are as individuals and allowing this to be reflected in every element of your wedding, from fashion to décor, to bridal photography.

What is your experience and training background?
I began my hairdressing apprenticeship in New Zealand in 1997 where I worked up to management as a Senior Stylist. With a passion for makeup I began studying for a diploma in Makeup Artistry at the Academy Of Film And Television Makeup school. It wasn't long before I was working for Dior as a Makeup Artist, creating trend-defining makeup looks from the runways of Paris.

Eventually the call to Australia was too strong, and after moving to Sydney my passion flourished at Chanel. Since then I have worked on countless weddings and advertisements, catalogues, commercials, head shots, events, performances, fashion editorials, runways, and independent films. My work has been published in magazines, featured in commercial campaigns and I have even had the opportunity to work with celebrities. I regularly attend professional training and workshops, work with other artists in the field, and take on new challenges to keep my skills sharp. It's safe to say that my efforts have snowballed into an amazing and enriching career!

What makeup brands and products do you use?
We use only the highest quality products such as Georgio Armani, Tom Ford, Nars, Makeup Forever, Chanel, MAC, Urben Decay, Bobbi Brown, Dior and Dermalogica.

Will I need to touch up my makeup at any time? What happens if my lipstick wears off?
  • Ask your matron of honour or bridesmaid to carry your Bridal Touch-Up Kit and ask them to tell you if your makeup looks less than pristine.
  • Your lipstick is going to get a workout on your wedding day! I suggest grabbing a tube of the shade your makeup artist recommends.
  • My friends often make fun of me for taking a mirror with me everywhere I go but it's a good idea to bring along a compact of your own.
  • If you're prone to oily skin, or getting married on a sunny day, blotting papers can be a great help. Just blot away any shiny spots and you'll be sure not to outshine the ring on your finger.
  • Pressed powder sets makeup, reduces shine and evens skin tone - it's an essential makeup basic for your photo-ready touch-ups for your big day.
  • Tissues. For those teary moments - dab, don't wipe!

How much time do you need for each person on the wedding day?
An experienced team will do the work of planning a hair and makeup schedule and have all people ready on time. Hair styling will take approximately 45-60 minutes per person, depending on the type of hair style. Makeup applications take approximately 45-60 minutes per person. If you have a large group and an early ceremony time, ask us and we can bring assistants with us to save on time.

Will the makeup look great in person and in photographs?
Makeup can absorb or reflect light; a knowledgeable makeup artist will know what to use on your face and décolletage for a flawless, cohesive look in person and under lights and cameras. Body blemishes can be addressed with water resistant and transfer resistant products.

Do you offer a trial service?
The trial is our first meeting and the time to determine the perfect hair/makeup for you. We will discuss exactly what you have in mind for your big day. Don't worry if you are unsure about what you want, just bring along pics you like and we will walk you through the process.
